Arnold Mickens, the Broad Ripple graduate who took the faculty soccer world by storm together with his sensational two-year run at Butler University, died Tuesday on the age of 49.
Mickens was an all-state working again and linebacker at Broad Ripple. After transferring to Butler from Indiana College, Mickens set 18 NCAA Division I-AA sport, season and profession soccer information. He led the nation in dashing with an NCAA-record 2,255 yards in 1994. He set an NCAA file by dashing for greater than 200 yards in eight consecutive video games in 1994. He rushed for 203 yards in a single half towards Valparaiso. He ran the ball 56 instances in a single sport, and on 26 consecutive performs in one other.
“We rode Arnold,” stated Ken LaRose, who coached Mickens and is now Butler’s affiliate athletic director of growth. “Folks knew what we have been going to do, and we stated, ‘Cease us.’ You would be referred to as an fool when you have this stallion within the backfield and also you’re throwing the ball.”
Arnold appeared in three video games for the Indianapolis Colts in 1996.

He influenced numerous college students throughout his time working within the Indianapolis Public Faculties system. He hung out at George Washington Excessive Faculty as a counselor, and was working as a ninth grade counselor at Crispus Attucks on the time of his loss of life.
“He was a mild big,” Attucks principal Lauren Franklin stated. “He introduced that aura of peace round him. He had a real spirit and a real coronary heart for serving to younger folks. It wasn’t only a job. It was one thing he was really keen about.”
